Interview / Entrevista – Sixty Miles Ahead
“Insanity”, from Sixty Miles Ahead, was an album that amazed us for its rock power, something we thought of extinct – you can check out the review over here. It was such a great (and good) impact that we had to talk with them. We talked with friendly drummer Luca Caserini, who revelead to us the way the band is currently facing things and answered some more curiosities we had regarding Sixty Miles Ahead.
WOM – Hello Luca! First of all, thanks for this interview. Let me congratulate you for this great album. I guess you are all quite satisfied with it, right?
Luca – Hello and thank you! Yes, we are very satisfied about ‘Insanity’ both in terms of song writing and production…We had the complete control on every aspect of the album and we took some risks with that too, but it’s worth it!
WOM – The thing I like the most in “Insanity” is that it sounds modern but at the same time has that classic rock feel of the eighties and seventies without sounding retro. What were your intentions regarding the overall sound? Did you have a plan or it just happened this way?
Luca – I’m glad to hear you noticed it! In terms of songwriting this comes pretty naturally to us because everyone in the band has different influences. We love rock and metal from every decade! It’s non easy but we’re always trying to reinventing Hard Rock and Heavy Metal classics in our own way… Talking about the sound it was planned in some way, we wanted to sound modern by having a huge sound and by adding some synth and electronics to a couple of songs, but we wanted the instruments and voice to sound “real” and dynamic. We also recorded part of the tracks in our own studio, right where the songs were written and played for the first time without adding too many effects and editing in the mixing process.
WOM – What influences do you hold dear and that influenced not only “Insanity” but to start Sixty Miles Ahead?
Luca – We always loved the bands that tryied to make their own path in the modern rock/metal scene. I’m thinking about Alter Bridge, Avenged Sevenfold, Shinedown, Stone Sour and Black Stone Cherry.
WOM – I don’t know how it is in Italy, but here in Portugal, rock, hard rock and metal are underground, with pratically no expression in mainstream media… is it equal over there?
Luca – Yes, unfortunately here it’s the same. I mean, there’s lot of rock/metal listeners in Italy but all the interest goes to the big international acts and large festivals/concerts. There’s lack of interest for the local band both from the people and the the music business, but we’re doing our best to change that and signing with Eclipse Records from the U.S. made a big difference!
WOM – How about playing live? Do you have a strong circuit for concerts in Italy? Have you any plans of touring Europe? Portugal maybe?
Luca – We strongly believe that the live shows are the right place to enjoy our music at its best. We always played live a lot in the past five years! We’re about to do a special release show in Milan and then other Italian shows will be announced. Touring Europe its our main goal at the moment, we hope to have good news soon.
WOM – As a band, what are your intentions? What do you want to achieve?
Luca – I think that every musician dreams about playing in large arenas and big crowds…but the main point is to reach people hearts and knowing that your music means something to someone! At the moment the goal is to reach as much listeners as possible in every way and let everyone know about the new album. In the future it would be great to share a tour with the bands I told you before.
WOM – How do you see the future in music or in heavy music in particular? Do you have a bad vibe about the business side or do you think that these changes are inevitable?
Luca – The changes are inevitable, but know they’re now happening faster than ever before so it’s really hard to keep on track… In my own opinion there are too many bands that sounds exactly the same and I have the feeling that that’s what the music business supported in the past years. It’s also difficult to find something interesting, but we have the power to choose now more than ever, so it’s also about don’t being lazy and search what’s good for us as listeners.
WOM – Hope you guys can get all the success you can because this album really rocks! Just to finish of this interview I only ask you to leave a last thought on your plans in the near future.
Luca – Thank you!! It really means a lot to us! We cannot wait to release ‘Insanity’ and play live the new songs, they’re about to change our live show radically. “Insanity”, dos Sixty Miles Ahead foi um álbum que nos impressionou pelo seu poder rock, algo que julgávamos estar em extinção – poderão conferir a review aqui. O impacto foi de tal forma que tivemos que ter uma conversa com a banda italiana, tendo como interlocutor o simpático baterista Luca Caserini, que nos revelou como é o actual momento vivido pela banda e respondeu a mais umas curiosidades que tínhamos a respeito dos Sixty Miles Ahead.
WOM – Olá Luca! Antes de mais, obrigado por esta entrevista. Deixa-nos dar os parabéns por este grande álbum que é “Insanity”. Presumo que estejam todos satisfeitos com o mesmo, certo?
Luca – Olá e obrigado! E sim, estamos muito satisfeitos com “Insanity” tanto em termos de composição como de produção. Tivemos controlo absoluto em cada aspecto do álbum e tomámos alguns riscos com isso também, mas valeu bem a pena!
WOM – Uma das coisas que mais gostei em “Insanity” é que soa moderbo mas ao mesmo tem um feeling de rock clássico das década de setenta e oitenta sem necessariamente soar retro. Quais foram as vossas intenções em relação ao som como um todo? Tiveram algum plano definido ou apenas deixaram fluir?
Luca – Fico feliz que tenhas reparado! Em termos de composição, surgiu tudo muito naturalmente porque todos na banda temos diferentes influências. Adoramos rock e metal de todas as épocas! Não é fácil mas tentamos sempre reinventar os clássicos do hard rock e do heavy metal à nossa maneira. Em relação ao som, foi planeado de alguma forma. Queriamos soar modernos por ter um som grande, poderoso e acrescentar alguns sintetizadores e elementos electrónicos em algumas canções, mas queriamos que tanto a voz como os instrumentos soassem reais e dínamicos. Também gravámos parte das músicas no nosso próprio estúdio, onde as músicas foram escritas e tocadas pela primeira vez sem adicionar muitos efeitos ou fazer edições no processo de mistura.
WOM – Que influências vos são mais queridas e que influenciaram não só “Insanity” mas também o iniciar a carreira dos Sixty Miles Ahead?
Luca – Sempre gostámos de bandas que tentar criar o seu próprio caminho na cena de rock/metal moderno. Bandas como Alter Bridge, Avenged Sevenfold, Shinedown, Stone Sour e Black Stone Cherry.
WOM – Não sei como é em Itália, mas aqui em Portugal, o rock, hard rock e o metal são underground, sem praticamente expressão nos media mainstream… aí é igual?
Luca – Sim, infelizmente, aqui é igual. Quer dizer, existem muitos ouvintes de rock/metal em Itália, mas o interesse vai na grande maioria para bandas estrangeiras e grandes festivais ou concertos. Há uma falta de interesse para as bandas locais quer por parte do público quer por parte do negócio da música em si, mas estamos a dar o nosso melhor para mudar isso e assinar com a Eclipse Records dos E.U.A. fez uma grande diferença!
WOM – E tocar ao vivo? Existe um bom circuito para concertos em Itália? Existem planos de digressões pela Europa, passar por Portugal, talvez?
Luca – Acreditamos muito que os concertos são o sítio correcto para que a nossa música seja aproveitada no seu melhor. Nos últimos cinco anos temos tocado muito. E estamos prestes a fazer um concerto de lançamento do álbum em Milão e posteriormente serão anunciados mais espectáculos. Digressão pela Europa é o nosso grande objectivo, pelo que esperamos ter boas notícias em breve.
WOM – Como banda, quais são os vossos objectivos? O que esperam atingir?
Luca – Penso que todos os músicos sonham em tocar em estádios cheios mas o principal é chegar ao coração das pessoas e saber que a tua música significa algo para alguém! Neste momento, o objectivo é chegar a quantos mais ouvintes possível, de todas as formas que estejam à disposição e dar a conhecer o nosso novo álbum. No futuro seria óptimo partilhar uma digressão com as bandas que já citei anteriormente.
WOM – Como é que vês o futuro na música ou na música pesada em particular? Alguns maus pressentimentos em relação ao lado dos negócios ou pensas que estas mudanças são inevitáveis?
Luca – As mudanças são inevitáveis mas, sabes, elas estão a acontecer a uma velocidade nunca antes vista, por isso é difícil acompanhar… na minha opinião muito pessoal, existem demasiadas bandas que soem todas ao memso e tenho a sensação que é algo que o negócio da música apoiou nos últimos anos. Também é difícil encontrar algo interessante, mas temos mais poder para escolher do que alguma vez tivemos, por isso é também a questão de não se ser preguiçoso e procurar aquilo que é bom para nós enquanto ouvintes.
WOM – Da nossa parte, esperamos que tenham todo o sucesso possível porque este álbum é mesmo muito bom! Para terminar a entrevista, pedia apenas para deixar uma última palavra sobre os vossos planos para o futuro mais próximo.
Luca – Obrigado! Realmente significa muito para nós! Mal podemos esperar para lançar “Insanity” e tocar ao vivo as novas músicas, elas vão mudar o nosso espectáculo ao vivo por completo.
