WOM Interviews – Pits
Pits was founded in 2022 by guitarist Alex to bring a decade of accumulated musical ideas to life. What began as a solo songwriting effort evolved into a full lineup with the addition of vocalist Andrey later that year, followed by the arrival of Rodion (drums) and Aleksandr (bass) in 2024. Bringing together members from established acts, the band combines veteran experience with a distinct approach to the genre. Their debut album, “Macabre Luxuria”, showcases this chemistry—melding Alex’s melodic blackened riffing and Rodion’s blast beats with Alex’s progressive fretless bass and Andrey’s searing vocals. We got in touch with Alex for a little chat.
1 – Pits was founded as a solo project. Tell us how it evolved to a full band.
Pits began as a solo outlet for my own musical ideas, but the transition to a full band was always the plan. Interestingly, most of the lineup has a shared history—back in 2012, everyone in the current band except for our drummer had already collaborated on a project and even released a track together. Because of that prior experience and the chemistry we had, it was already very clear to me whom I wanted to work with to get this record done. Having that established connection made it much easier to move from a one-man vision into a collaborative effort. Once we began working, their input helped flesh out the initial demos into the layered, technical sound heard on the album today.
2 – Guide us through the writing and recording process of “Macabre Luxuria”.
The writing process for Macabre Luxuria was a long-term project; many of the riffs and structural ideas were gathered over several years. One of the primary challenges we faced was the logistical side of the recording. Since all of us recorded our parts independently in our own studios, bringing everything together into a cohesive album required a significant amount of coordination and fine-tuning. We had to be very deliberate about the arrangements to ensure the final mix felt unified. Our main focus throughout was finding a balance where the technical complexity of the performances didn’t overshadow the dark, dissonant atmosphere we wanted the record to have.
3 – Lyrically, you paint a dark picture of the human race. What comes first, the musical ideas or the lyrical concept?
In our case, the music always comes first. I find that the composition itself sets the emotional tone and the ‘landscape’ of the track before any words are written. Once a song is musically complete and the atmosphere is established, the lyrics are then written completely by Andrey. He develops themes that fit the existing mood of the instruments, ensuring the vocal patterns and the subject matter—often dealing with human decay and social reflections—reinforce the tension already present in the music. The lyrics serve to highlight and finalize the vision created by the instruments.
4 – Where do you envision that Pits can evolve musically in the near future?
5 – Plans to promote “Macabre Luxuria” live?
Currently, there are no live performances planned. I have been focusing entirely on the studio side of things and the logistics of the album’s release. I want to make sure the music stands on its own first. That said, we aren’t opposed to the idea. Once we see that the timing is right and it is possible to properly translate the technicality and atmosphere of the record to a stage, it would be great to play live.
