Huntsmen – “Mandala Of Fear”

Fiquei logo hipnotizado pelo primeiro tema “Ride Out”. Não foi pelo instrumental (excelente) e pelas ambiências (muito próprias) e sim pelos coros. É como se estivessemos de volta aos anos setenta e estivessemos perante os coros de bandas como Genesis, Camel ou Yes, e a música na direcção de um sludge poderoso. Quase que parece um numa direcção e outro noutra, não é? “Quase“ e “parece” são as palavras chave. A ambiência é fantástica e este é um trabalho que me deu um gozo enorme interiorizar (não custou nada, foi o logo à primeira) e analisar. A cada audição novas sensações e é daqueles trabalhos para os quais é difícil de separarmos os temas individualmente. Sem dúvida que é um dos álbuns sludge do ano!

My Dying Bride – “The Ghost Of Orion”

Cinco anos é sempre muito tempo, principalmente em bandas que tantos gostamos como My Dying Bride. No entanto, tendo em conta tudo aquilo que a banda passou, até é um período bastante aceitável. Tendo em conta a qualidade do álbum em si, todas as queixas cessam de imediato. O primeiro ponto a salientar é a forma como a música soa. Poderoso, sonoridade forte mais ainda assim orgânica, salientando os principais valores da banda. Preservando acima de tudo a parte melódica (e melancólica) que fica bem intacta, muito graças ao violino inspirado. Depois a composição faz com que se sinta que estamos perante a reunião do melhor que a banda já fez. Sem sentir que é algo forçado ou sequer desinspirado. É mesmo um dos pontos altos da carreira da banda que já conta com trinta anos. Não é fácil.

Witchfinder – “Hazy Rites”

Peso pesado, paquidérmico e arrastado. Aquele tipo de som que tem o mesmo impacto que o sol no Verão quando queima intensamente. Está algo frio hoje em dia mas é esse o sentiment que se sente aqui na redacção a cada vez que ouvimos o ultimo trabalho dos Witchfinder. Arrastado como se tivesse em cima quinhentos quilos de calor e atinge-nos com essa intensidade, mas sempre com espaço e força suficiente para conseguirmos abanar a cabeça. Unícamente indicado para os amantes do doom, que gostam aqui e ali de stoner e de sludge. A união perfeita, num álbum muito bom.

Smoulder – “Dream Quest Ends”

Os canadianos Smoulder propõe-nos 2 temas novos, e três demos de faixas já lançadas. O Ep, abre com “Dream Quest Ends”, com uns riffs algo arrastados, pesados e melodiosos. A voz de Saraha Ann é a cereja no topo do bolo, pois não sendo o que podia esperar, encaixa bem e tem um desempenho nestes dois temas muito interessantes.“Warrior Witch Of Hell”, está dentro da linha da sua antecessora e navega pela mesma linha sonora.Não fiquei rendido, porque quero mais!

Disastroid – “Mortal Fools”

Well, I can say that this is the first that I found a stoner band to have addicting quick tempos, so we already have a very good start. Disastroid is a stoner metal band that within its style introduces some influences from grunge and noise rock. The one that I most notice in Mortal Fools is the noise rock one (as it is, from the two, the style that I’m most familiarized with) and let me tell you that it leaves a big positive dent in this group’s music with heavily marked rhythms. However, this is the first impression that the band gives us, as throughout this album they start “falling” to the typical style of stoner metal without much differentiation from the usual mix (a not so good aspect in my opinion). Regardless, the band presents here a good work that promises to be of great value to the already fans of the genre; regarding, the ones that don’t really appreciate it, I don’t think that it will be this album that will turn them into fans.

Dwaal – “Gospel of the Vile”

Originating from Norway and dating 6 years of existence, Dwall is a 6-membered band of sludge/post-metal. So, as the plebe that I am that doesn’t still get exactly what is post-metal, I’ll stick my own label to this genre; let’s call it “contemplative metal” as it seems a type of sound fitting for some soul-searching – not the one in which you end up crying about past mistakes, mind you (or maybe you do, who knows?). Gospel of the Vile, the band’s debut album released in the beginnings of March, is introduced with this type of sonority; however it’s soon made clear that the band prefers to choose a more aggressive approach with the following tracks (despite the occasional meditative mood re-introduced in some of the tracks). In fewer words, this album has a kind of dichotomy in itself, the aggression brought in by the vocals (that changes the nature of every instrument when it appears) and the peace provoked by the instrumental parts that really create a memorable atmosphere. Despite it being a solid album it also feels like it’s missing something, perhaps a more characteristic element that stands this band apart from others in a positive way. The positive aspect of this comment is that I think the band has room for improvement and to differentiate itself from other bands of the same style, but regardless they have made a good debut album for themselves.

Brant Bjork – “Brant Bjork”

O mestre está de volta. E já para o seu décimo-terceiro álbum, uma marca que não deixa de ser impressionante. É pena é que o regresso não chegue para nos satisfazer as nossas expectativas. Minimalista, repetitivo mas sem que com isso signifique que tenhamos algum efeito hipnótico, Bjork acaba por não conseguir espalhar o seu encanto da forma desejável,falta alguma explosão e apesar do efeito “boa onda” que temos em músicas como “Stardust & Diamond Eyes”, há pouca matéria para mais tarde recordar. Aliás, cada audição e torna aborrecida em pouco tempo. Não correu bem.

Sycomore – “Bloodstone”

Hailing from France, Sycomore is a French sludge metal band that presented its newest and 3rd full length album back in January, called Bloodstone. Previously, I’ve done a review of an album that mixed sludge and noise; this one does the same, but in a different way. The main noise rock aspect that you feel in this album is the chaotic one: besides the shouted vocals, the most noise thing about this album is the rhythm that is often hard to distinguish and/or is not that stable (not the best things for a listener as me). This all being said, this wasn’t a good album for me to listen, besides being of a style that I don’t wholly appreciate, it also involves the elements I least like from another style that I kind of enjoy (noise rock). It’s the average stoner metal without any specific direction but with some new elements. Besides that, it’s the usual mix that doesn’t really enchant anymore by itself.
