Zolfo – “Delusion of Negation”

Zolfo, a band from Italy, is a “new” band in the scene, at least in a way. Formed in 2016, they’ve just started releasing music in 2019 with a cassette containing two singles “Phosphene” and “Floaters” which made way for their debut album, “Delusion of Negation” which was released this last January. This band’s genre is hard to pinpoint exactly, however you can definitely say it’s somewhere in the spectrum of doom metal, being “Delusion of Negation” mainly characterized by a clear investment in a concise sound with varying tempos and with some technicalities not usually heard in this genre. Doom, sludge and every style associated might easily fall on a category of sound that might be labeled as “sounding all the same”, but even if that is already a certified fallacy among the community, “Delusion of Negation” serves as another example of how untrue the previous statement is. In my somewhat relatively short experience with these styles, I’ve found out that bands typically (but not always) choose between the “drugs approach” or “devil worshipping approach” when stylizing their own doom/sludge/stoner sound; when it comes to this band, they seem to choose neither and opt carve their own path, which, as I’ve said, I can’t really pinpoint the main root (despite their own name hinting at Satanism). Either way, this one is an obvious recommendation, not only because of its overall sound, which is great and not very hard to digest if you’re not a fan of the genre, but also because of some segments which really highlighted this album for me (example: the drum work in the track “Existential Prolapse” which despite sounding simple, is one of the main memories that I retained from first listening to this album) and also because of how clear everything sounds without any instrument being dragged out and every single one being easily listened/felt. Be on the lookout for these guys in the future!

Nuit D’Encre – “Sans Maux Dire”

Não há muitas informações acerca deste trabalho a não ser que é um projecto francês instrumental que anda algures entre o doom e o pós-metal instrumental. Em termos sonoros, dá-nos muitos repentes do que os Karma To Burn fazem se não estivessem a demonstrar que se estavam a divertir. O tom aqui é soturno e sério mas isso não diminui o groove dos riffs ou a validade das atmosferas criadas, sufocantes mas envolventes ao mesmo tempo. Por falar em atmosfera, o tom frio e desolado da capa acaba por ir ao encontro do que se pode ouvir aqui. Estreia discográfica que nos surpreendeu pela positiva.

Void of Sleep – “Metaphora”

There seems to be something going between Sludge Metal and Italy which I haven’t quite figured out. Void of Sleep are one more case which proves that this style still has plenty of ground to be uncovered. Celebrating a decade after its foundation, the member of Void of Sleep presents their 3rd album this month (March) – Metaphora. After a calm instrumental introduction to this album, the band presents their own take on the genre, which has a definite pull towards the rock scene, more than the metal one, despite being still a mix of both. After that, we’re taken through a hypnotizing journey guided mainly through the actual instruments rather than the vocals which are a bit less frequent in this album, or at least aren’t as much of a protagonist as they are in other works. That being said, this is a work of enveloping music which makes you stop everything you’re doing to listen to it attentively or inversely make you want to stop listening: the point is that it’s complex “music/world-building” that doesn’t really go with anything else, in other words, if you want to enjoy it fully, you’re better doing it in the quietness of your bedroom while doing nothing. And hey, that’s a positive thing!

Hayvanlar Alemi – “Psychedelia In Times Of Turbulence”

Nunca um título nos soou tão real e acertado. Psicadelismos em tempos de turbulência é mesmo o que precisamos. Não temos muito conhecimento da cena turca mas parece que os Hayvanlar Alemi causam um impacto positivo para que fiquemos muito bem impressionados. Sonoridade instrumental, com rock psych a comandar os destinos mas sem se fixar muito nesse estado de espírito. A coisa funciona bem, e é fácil voltarmos a estes temas regularmente. Talvez não exista um tema que se destaque mas este é um álbum que funciona como um todo. Lembram-se dos álbuns, certo? Aquelas coisas onde existe mais do que uma música de uma só banda.

Dozer – “ In The Tail Of A Comet”

Os Dozer foram uma das bandas que mais impacto tiveram quando, muitos anos atrás, comecei a desbravar o underground da cena stoner. E este In The Tail Of a Comet” foi uma das grandes referências. A banda nunca passou do seu estatuto de culto e já anda silenciosa há algum tempo, mas isso não nos apaga a memória. Uma certa mistura entre a acidez vocal de uns Corrosion Of Conformity, da sua fase “Wiseblood”, e o fuzz de uns Fu Manchu, este é um álbum perfeito para quem gosta de stoner em toda a sua simplicidade e esplendor. Daqueles que apenas ficam melhor com o tempo.

Dozer – “Madre De Dios”

A Heavy Psych Sounds continua na sua senda para reapresentar os Dozer – serviço público de valor, quanto a nós – e agora é a vez do segundo álbum da banda, editado originalmente em 2001. Um seguimento natural da estreia, podemos encarar este como um trabalho mais directo ao assunto e mais uptempo, mais rock’n’roll, com a faixa de abertura “Let The Shit Roll” a dar o mote. Groove do deserto, produção orgânica e aquele rock cru tal como se fazia pelo underground no início do século. Quando ainda não era moda este tipo de coisas. Não é moda agora, mas há uma percepção e maior abertura para clássicos destes.

Dozer – “Call It Conspiracy”

Apesar de ter sido lançado apenas um ano após o anterior álbum (e dois após a estreia, “Call It Conspiracy” é uma besta diferente. Costuma-se dizer que o terceiro álbum é de confirmação e no caso dos suecos confirmou-nos o seu potencial para evoluir para além de estar sempre a tentar a fazer o mesmo. Continua a ser fuzz, continua a ser stoner, mas há aqui uma abrangência muito para além daquele nicho, há novas soluções e novas ideias. O som, mais forte, também ajuda a que se tenha essa perspectiva mais ampla daquilo que a banda fazia. Sem dúvida que este é o que recomendamos para quem não os conheça. Começando aqui, tudo o resto sabe bem.

Arctic Sea Survivors – “Into Barren Lands”

Os Arctic Sea Survivors passaram-me despercebido em 2018, com este seu álbum de estreia mas por algum motivo vim aqui parar e ainda bem porque está aqui um retrato perfeito da razão de gostar de música instrumental, de doom metal e de pós-metal. Todas as melhores características destes três géneros estão aqui juntas para nos trazer um álbum que nos transmite emoções de forma à qual é impossível ignorar. Será sem dúvida um álbum para ouvir de seguida e talvez com uma certa disposição mental, mas seja como for, é uma obra-prima.
