WOM Interviews – Shining Black
PT – A World Of Metal, aproveitou a oportunidade de poder conversar um pouco com o guitarrista Olaf Thorsen (Labyrinth, Vision Divine), um dos membros a par de Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire, Royal Hunt) sobre o mais recente projecto da Frontiers Music, os Shining Black. – por Miguel Correia
Olá Olaf, bem vindo à World Of Metal, começo por vos agradecer a oportunidade desta entrevista e dar os parabéns por “Shining Black”… um disco que acho muito entusiasmante.
Olá Miguel, muito, muito obrigado! Penso que é a primeira vez que dou uma entrevista para uma publicação Portuguesa… vamos lá!
O mundo dá muitas voltas. Quatro anos após a tua curta experiência (2014-2016) nos Labyrinth com o Mark Boals, agora finalmente aparecem juntos num projecto chamado Shining Black. Como é que tudo isto aconteceu?
Pois, é verdade. As coisas aconteceram de forma muito natural: eu estava originalmente a trabalhar num álbum a solo, a trabalhar muitas ideias e a base seria um disco totalmente instrumental, mas quando a Frontiers ouviu as primeiras canções demo, o Elio perguntou-me se alguma vez tinha pensado em colocar uma voz naquelas linhas, referindo mesmo o Mark. Ele sentia que para aquelas canções tudo encaixava bem para uma voz e que o Mark seria o ideal! Foi uma grande ideia, para ser honesto, por isso escrevi ao Mark a perguntar-lhe sobre isso e ele ficou imediatamente entusiasmado com a ideia de trabalharmos em conjunto. Pensando bem, como tinha a oportunidade de trabalhar com um dos meus cantores favoritos, pensei que na verdade teria sido uma loucura lançar um álbum instrumental. Conversei com Mark sobre tudo isto e concordámos em trabalhar em algo diferente, um álbum completo de canções com vozes e aqui estamos nós agora!
Em bom tempo surgiu essa ideia… e olhando para aquilo que tem sido a grande aposta da Frontiers através do seu presidente Serafino Perugino um pioneiro neste tipo de projectos, as coisas têm sido fantásticas, com excelentes resultados. Até que ponto vocês também têm autonomia naquilo que estão a fazer?
Sim, o Serafino e a Frontiers em geral têm uma capacidade muito forte na montagem deste tipo de projetos e certamente sabem o que estão a fazer, mesmo antes das coisas serem feitas, há um plano, com toda a certeza, mas ao mesmo tempo é importante fazer sentir a todos que nesse plano não há espaço para definir a linha musical, tivemos liberdade total… Este álbum teria soado exatamente o mesmo com qualquer outra editora. Ouviram o que tínhamos feito, depois ajudaram-me com algumas sugestões no alinhamento do álbum e foi isso. Há um respeito muito forte vindo da parte da Frontiers perante o trabalho dos seus artistas e isso é fundamental, claro. Eu particularmente aprecio muito esta confiança total.
Sem dúvida, e sei por outros artistas ligados à Frontiers que as coisas funcionam assim. Por outro lado, existem os fans, estes talvez mais exigentes, mas ávidos por coisas novas e de qualidade e neste ponto, não sentes que muitos deles gostariam por exemplo de ver os Shining Black ao vivo ou outro de ver outro disco acontecer…
Claro que pensamos nisso, mas com esta situação pandémica que estamos a viver e que nossa indústria tarda em se libertar, as coisas estão muito mais complicadas e certamente diferentes do que estávamos a pensar. De qualquer modo, adoraríamos absolutamente tocar ao vivo e esperamos que haja uma oportunidade, mais cedo ou mais tarde. Não somos um simples “projeto de estúdio”, somos todos músicos com uma longa história, feitos de espetáculos ao vivo e seria natural para nós tocarmos ao vivo a música que escrevemos
E planos para um novo disco?
Claro que há! Gostaríamos de escrever um segundo álbum. Vamos ver como correm as coisas e esperamos que haja espaço neste Mundo para outro álbum nosso, (risos)!
Por falar em discos, aproveito a oportunidade para falarmos sobre “Shining Black”, reforço os parabéns pela excelente qualidade musical, naturalmente expectável. Duas músicas foram escolhidas para o fazer chegar ao mercado: “Just Another Day” e o brilhante “My Life”. Porquê estas escolhas?
Muito obrigado pelas tuas palavras simpáticas. Não foi nada fácil escolher as primeiras canções a serem utilizadas como single para apresentar a banda. Penso que mudámos de ideias algo como 3 ou 4 vezes, porque existem algumas canções diferentes neste álbum e não são nada semelhantes, por isso a questão era “como nos apresentarmos às pessoas?”. No final, decidimos optar por aquelas canções que eram melodicamente sólidas e um pouco diferentes umas das outras. A primeira é uma das canções mais melódicas que escrevemos, enquanto “My Life” foi um pouco mais rápida e pensámos que podiam mostrar dois lados diferentes da banda, ao mesmo tempo que mostravam às pessoas que éramos definitivamente uma banda melódica.
O que está liricamente por detrás de “My Life”, uma pérola musical.
“My Life” conta a história de um homem que pensa na sua vida, como tem sido até agora e a perguntar-se o que virá no seu futuro. No final, não sabemos o que nos espera a todos, mas devemos gostar de viver cada momento, que é único e não voltar mais.
Concordo absolutamente, há momentos únicos que devemos aproveitar. E falando globalmente neste disco, o que sentes com o resultado final?
É sempre difícil para mim definir a minha música com uma palavra, ou de uma forma muito simples, porque honestamente não penso dessa forma, limito-me a tocar e mantenho-me fiel ao que está a girar na minha cabeça. Certamente é pesada e melódica, mas ao mesmo tempo tem um toque escuro e triste (ou pelo menos é o que eu ouço), o que se enquadra na letra que escrevi. As minhas letras não são necessariamente “tristes”, mas certamente não são as mais felizes que se encontram por aí. Falam antes de pessoas que se sentam e pensam nas suas vidas e também se interrogam sobre o seu futuro.
Mesmo assim lanço-.te esse desafio. Se tivesses de o definir com uma frase simples, como seria?
Bem, ok, pesado, melódico e divertido de tocar.
Marks Boals e Ölaf Thorsen são um duo vencedor e inspirador. Qual é para ti a melhor canção deste trabalho?
Tanto para mim como para Mark, a nossa canção favorita é definitivamente “A Sad Song”. Pode parecer “apenas mais uma balada” para algumas pessoas, mas tanto a letra como a música fizeram-na sair de uma forma muito especial. Eu simplesmente adoro a melodia tocada pela guitarra e o primeiro momento em que Mark entra com o primeiro verso. Dá-me arrepios cada vez que a ouço e considero esta canção uma das melhores que já lancei.
Concordo é uma música que nos faz sentir algo diferente, sem dúvida. Olaf, como foi gravar este disco? Hoje em dia, com as novas tecnologias, as distâncias são facilmente encurtadas, mas em tempos de confinamento social, difícil de gerir para todos, como foi para compor este disco, para gravar…
Eu e Mark vivemos em dois cantos distantes: ele vive nos EUA e eu vivo em Itália. Claro que assim, teria sido muito complicado, caro e limitativo tentar organizar forma de trabalhar presencialmente. De facto, utilizámos muito a Internet, conversamos quase diariamente, trocando ficheiros e ideias, trabalhando com as canções desde as suas primeiras notas, modificando, mudando, adaptando-as até sentirmos que seria exatamente como queríamos que fosse. Tem sido uma forma muito produtiva de trabalhar e, acreditem, perdemos muito menos tempo do que estar sentados numa sala, à espera de que um de nós os dois, tivesse uma ideia e a tivesse pronta para ser ouvida pelo outro.
Olaf, se me permites, como está o trabalho com os Labyrinth?
Sem problemas, até posso adiantar que vamos lançar um novo álbum, está misturado e estará pronto para lançar por estes dias.

Hello Olaf, welcome to World Of Metal, I start by thanking you for the opportunity of this interview and congratulating you on “Shining Black”… a record that I find very exciting.
Hello Miguel, thank you very, very much! I think this is the first time I’ve given an interview for a Portuguese publication… let’s get it on!
The world goes around a lot and four years after your short experience (2014-2016) in Labyrinth with Mark Boals, you finally appear together in a project called Shining Black. How did all this happen?
Well, it’s true. Things happened very naturally: I was originally working on a solo album, working on a lot of ideas and the basis would be a totally instrumental album, but when Frontiers heard the first demo songs, Elio asked me if I had ever thought of putting a voice on those lines, even referring to Mark. He felt that for those songs everything fit well for one voice and that Mark would be ideal! It was a great idea, to be honest, so I wrote Mark asking him about it and he was immediately excited about the idea of working together. Come to think of it, since I had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite singers, I thought it would actually have been crazy to release an instrumental album. I talked to Mark about all this and we agreed to work on something different, a whole album of songs with voices and here we are now!
In good time this idea came up…and looking at what has been Frontiers big bet through its president Serafino Perugino a pioneer in this kind of projects, things have been fantastic, with excellent results. To what extent do you also have autonomy in what you are doing?
Yes, Serafino and Frontiers in general have a very strong capacity in assembling this kind of projects and certainly they know what they are doing, even before things are done, there is a plan, for sure, but at the same time it is important to make everyone feel that in this plan there is no space to define the musical line, we had total freedom… This album would have sounded exactly the same with any other label. They heard what we had done, then helped us with some suggestions in the album alignment and that was it. There is a very strong respect coming from Frontiers for the work of their artists and that is fundamental, of course. I particularly appreciate this total confidence.
No doubt, and I know from other artists connected to Frontiers that it works that way. On the other hand, there are the fans, these maybe more demanding, but eager for new and quality things and at this point, you don’t feel that many of them would like for example to see Shining Black live or another to see another record happen?
Of course, we think about it, but with this pandemic situation that we are living and that our industry is slow to free itself, things are much more complicated and certainly different than we were thinking. Anyway, we would absolutely love to play live and hope that there will be an opportunity sooner or later. We’re not a simple “studio project”, we’re all musicians with a long history, made of live shows and it would be natural for us to play live the music we wrote.
What about plans for a new disc?
Of course, there are! We would like to write a second album. Let’s see how things go and hope there’s room in this World for another album of ours, (laughs)!
Speaking of records, I take the opportunity to talk about “Shining Black”, I reinforce the congratulations for the excellent musical quality, naturally expected. Two songs were chosen to get him to the market: “Just Another Day” and the brilliant “My Life”. Why these choices?
Thank you very much for your kind words. It was not at all easy to choose the first songs to be used as single to present the band. I think we changed our minds something like 3 or 4 times because there are some different songs on this album and they are not at all similar, so the question was “how to introduce ourselves to people? In the end, we decided to go for those songs that were melodically solid and a little different from each other. The first one is one of the most melodic songs we wrote, while “My Life” was a little faster and we thought they could show two different sides of the band, while showing people that we were definitely a melodic band.
What is lyrically behind “My Life,” a musical pearl.
“My Life” tells the story of a man who thinks about his life, as it has been until now and wonders what will come in his future. In the end, we don’t know what awaits us all, but we should like to live each moment, which is unique and not come back anymore.
I absolutely agree, there are unique moments that we must enjoy. And speaking globally on this record, how do you feel about the final result?
It’s always hard for me to define my music with one word, or in a very simple way, because honestly, I don’t think that way, I just play and stay faithful to what’s spinning in my head. It’s certainly heavy and melodic, but at the same time it has a dark and sad touch (or at least that’s what I hear), which fits the lyrics I wrote. My lyrics are not necessarily “sad”, but they are certainly not the happiest ones out there. They speak before people who sit and think about their lives and also wonder about their future.
Even so, I challenge you to do it. If you had to define it with a simple sentence, what would it be like?
Well, ok, heavy, melodic and fun to play.
Marks Boals and Ölaf Thorsen are a winning and inspiring duo. What is for you the best song of this work?
For me and Mark our favorite song is definitely “A Sad Song”. It may sound like “just another ballad” to some people, but both the lyrics and the music made it come out in a very special way. I just love the melody played by the guitar and the first moment Mark enters with the first verse. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear it and I consider this song one of the best I’ve ever released.
I agree it’s a song that makes us feel something different, no doubt. Olaf, how was it to record this record? Nowadays, with the new technologies, the distances are easily shortened, but in times of social confinement, difficult to manage for everyone, as it was to compose this record, to record?
Mark and I live in two distant corners: he lives in the USA and I live in Italy. Of course, it would have been very complicated, expensive and limiting to try to organize a way of working in person. In fact, we used the Internet a lot, we talked almost daily, exchanging files and ideas, working with the songs since their first notes, modifying, changing, adapting them until we felt it would be exactly as we wanted it to be. It’s been a very productive way of working and, believe me, we’ve wasted much less time than sitting in a room, waiting for one of us to have an idea and have it ready to be heard by the other.
Olaf, if I may, how is the work with Labyrinth?
No problem, I can even say that we are going to release a new album, it is mixed and will be ready to release by these days.
