Falar dos Tankard é falar de uma banda mítica, marcante e de sonoridade contagiante. Falar de Andreas Gerre, vocalista, é falar de uma pessoa amável, descontraída e com enorme boa disposição. A WoM teve a oportunidade de chegar à fala com Gerre e passado, presente e futuro foram temas de conversa. – Por Miguel Correia / Foto por Axel Jusseits
Olá Gerre, bem-vindo à World Of Metal e a um país com muitos e muitos fãs de Tankard.
Olá Miguel eu é que agradeço o vosso interesse e falar com alguém de um país onde nos divertimos por algumas vezes a fazer algo que amamos é sempre fantástico.
Podemos começar pelo último disco dos Tankard, “One Foot In the Grave”… o que tem feito a banda nestes últimos anos?
Olha, respondendo à tua pergunta… nós tínhamos muitos planos, muitos concertos e com toda esta situação pandémica foi tudo por água abaixo… claro não tem sido muito fácil para a indústria, principalmente para as bandas, mas, nós também temos os nossos empregos e apesar de estarmos em confinamento, sentimos menos no aspeto financeiro, mas é triste tudo o que se vive, ninguém sabe o que está para acontecer, o futuro é muito incerto, mas vamos acreditar que tempos melhores virão.
Sim, não está a ser fácil e é mesmo melhor manter a esperança de que tudo será controlado. E para além do que disseste a banda tem pensado em novo material? Ouvi dizer que estará no próximo ano um novo disco.
Sim, é verdade. Temos aproveitado tudo isto para trabalhar em novas músicas, e as coisas estão no bom caminho. Há alguma frustração natural em todos nós, mas vamos esperar até a normalização das coisas e depois veremos como vamos gerir tudo isto. Queremos muito aquilo que todos querem, naturalmente. Como te disse há pouco, para todos aqueles que vivem da música estão a ser tempos muito difíceis.
Como conseguem conciliar o vosso dia a dia com a agenda dos Tankard?
Ter o nosso trabalho, acima de tudo dá-nos algumas garantias e por outro lado fazemos o que gostamos de fazer. Somos totalmente independentes, não temos de viver só da música e isso como te disse também nos dá muita tranquilidade. Por outro lado, e penso que também é isso que queres saber, há sempre um lado menos positivo que é o de não podermos aceitar todos os convites que temos para tocar, mas pronto essa é a nossa escolha. Gerir as coisas não é difícil tendo presente as referidas limitações. Tem resultado assim ao longo dos anos, foi a nossa opção inicial e aqui estamos. Contudo já combinamos voltar a ensaiar a tocar quer hajam concertos ou não….temos saudades de estar juntos de tocar. Há outras bandas que me pedem colaborações em trabalhos deles, as coisas não podem parar. Olha, por exemplo, fiz um videoclip com uma banda chamada Hammer King e foi muito divertido…é sempre bom estar ativo e neste fazer algo que gostas.
Falaste em opções iniciais da banda…depois de tantos anos, pensavas estar aqui agora ainda a falar?
Bem, na realidade (risos), nunca pensávamos lá atrás em 1982 quando tudo começou que esta aventura iria durar todos estes anos. E estar aqui hoje a falar contigo, a pensar na música e a fazer música é muito positivo, claro que sim e é um sentimento indescritível. São 39 anos… wow… estamos orgulhosos disto! Agora que falamos nisso espero que surja a oportunidade de celebrarmos os 40 anos thrash metal dos Tankard, seria um excelente sinal…um sinal de que nunca desistimos, que passamos todas as dificuldades e como te disse é com muito orgulho que aqui estamos. Sabes, aquela época dos anos 90 foi turbulenta para as bandas e penso que todos nós sentimos que isto não ia muito mais longe, mas felizmente muitos de nós ainda aqui estão. Não consigo imaginar a minha vida sem a banda! Talvez um dia quando não sentir condições para subir a um palco as coisas acabem, mas, para já…não!
Voltando ao último álbum, “One Foot In The Grave” é um título muito forte, especialmente quando se chega a uma determinada fase da vida. É assim que te sentes?
(risos) Ahhhhh não, nada disso, é só mais um álbum de puro thrash metal com um titulo cheio de ironia e (risos) estamos aqui e se calhar o próximo álbum será “One Foot Out Of The Grave”…(risos)
Os Tankard tem mantido uma abordagem lírica bastante equilibrada entre temas e assuntos engraçados e outros mais sérios.
Achas? Wow ainda bem, porque na promoção do último disco houve muitas perguntas sobre o facto de termos conteúdos políticos e algo mais sérios nas nossas letras, mas nós sempre tivemos isso, estranhei na altura as perguntas, mas ok, tirando o primeiro álbum há sempre muitas músicas com temáticas sérias e os tempos vividos nos momentos em que trabalhávamos em novo material. (risos) Até já tenho uma ideia para uma nova música “Lock Forever”…
O que viveste todos estes anos na cena?
É uma pergunta difícil para mim, mas, vamos lá. Nós crescemos com a cena da NWOBHM e era tudo novidade para nós, as primeiras revistas os primeiros concertos que assistimos uma loucura e nos tempos atuais o Heavy Metal é um estilo muito característico, pelos seus fans, por tudo aquilo que o rodeia e une. Há aquele sentimento de sermos todos irmãos, uma fraternidade, independentemente de tudo, cor, raça, se és gordo, magro….não há discriminação e a música une as pessoas, sentes isso?
Sim é verdade…
E toda esta comunidade continua a ser fantástica em toda a parte do mundo o que nos deixa muito orgulhosos de fazermos parte de tudo isto de sentir que o nosso nome fica ligado a coisas muito positivas. Há quem diga que o Heavy Metal pode acabar, mas não, eu não sinto isso, porque surgem sempre bandas novas, com novas direções musicais, mas acima de tudo marcadas por aquilo que fazemos assim como nós o fizemos no passado.
Portugal?
Excelente país. A última vez que aí estive foi para assistir a um jogo de futebol (risos). Já estivemos no Porto e em Lisboa e claro que gostávamos de voltar a Portugal, como falamos inicialmente, vamos ver o futuro, vamos ver o que nos espera e apesar de toda a esperança também temos de ser realistas das dificuldades numa normalização para a nossa indústria.

Hello Gerre, welcome to World Of Metal and to a country with many and many Tankard fans.
Hello Miguel, I thank you for your interest and talking to someone from a country where we sometimes have fun doing something we love is always great.
Can we start with Tankard’s last album, “One Foot In the Grave”… what has the band been doing these last years?
Look, answering your question… we had many plans, many gigs and with all this pandemic situation everything went down the drain… of course it hasn’t been very easy for the industry, especially for the bands, but we also have our jobs and although we are in lockdown, we feel less in the financial aspect, but it is sad everything that is going on, nobody knows what is going to happen, the future is very uncertain, but let’s believe that better times will come.
Yes, it’s not easy and it’s really better to keep hope that everything will be under control.
And besides what you said has the band been thinking about new material? I heard that there will be a new album next year. Yes, it’s true. We’ve been using all this to work on new music, and things are on track. There is some natural frustration in all of us, but we’ll wait until things normalize and then we’ll see how we manage all this. We really want what everyone wants, naturally. As I told you earlier, for all those who make their living from music these are very difficult times.
How do you manage to reconcile your day to day life with Tankard’s agenda?
Having our work, above all, gives us some guarantees and on the other hand we do what we like to do. We are totally independent, we don’t have to live only on music and that, as I told you, also gives us a lot of tranquility. On the other hand, and I think this is also what you want to know, there is always a less positive side which is that we cannot accept all the invitations we get to play, but that is our choice. Managing things is not difficult bearing in mind these limitations. It has worked out this way over the years, it was our initial choice, and here we are. However, we have already arranged to go back to rehearsing and playing, whether there are concerts or not. There are other bands that ask me to collaborate with them, things can’t stop. Look, for example, I did a music video with a band called Hammer King and it was a lot of fun…it’s always good to be active and in this doing something you like.
You talked about early band choices…after so many years, did you think you would be here now still talking about?
Well, actually (laughs), we never thought back in 1982 when it all started that this adventure would last all these years. And to be here today talking to you, thinking about the music and making music is very positive, of course it is, and it’s an indescribable feeling. It’s 39 years…wow…we are proud of this! Now that we mention it I hope the opportunity arises for us to celebrate Tankard’s 40 years of thrash metal, that would be a great sign…a sign that we never gave up, that we got through all the difficulties and as I told you it is with great pride that we are here. You know, that time in the 90’s was turbulent for bands and I think we all felt that this wasn’t going to go much further, but fortunately many of us are still here. I can’t imagine my life without the band! Maybe one day when I don’t feel able to go on stage things will end, but for now…no!
Going back to the latest album, “One Foot In The Grave” is a very strong title, especially when you reach a certain stage in life. Is that how you feel?
(laughs) Ahhhhh no, not at all, it’s just another pure thrash metal album with a title full of irony and (laughs) here we are and maybe the next album will be “One Foot Out Of The Grave”…(laughs)
Tankard has kept a very balanced lyrical approach between funny and serious themes and subjects.
Do you think so? Wow good, because in the promotion of the last album there were a lot of questions about the fact that we have political content and something more serious in our lyrics, but we always had that, I found the questions strange at the time, but ok, apart from the first album there are always a lot of songs with serious themes and the times we were working on new material. (laughs) I even already have an idea for a new song “Lock Forever”…
What have you experienced all these years in the scene?
This is a hard question for me, but, come on. We grew up with the NWOBHM scene and it was all new to us, the first magazines, the first concerts we attended were crazy, and nowadays Heavy Metal is a very characteristic style, for its fans, for everything that surrounds and unites it. There is that feeling of being all brothers, a brotherhood, regardless of everything, color, race, if you are fat, thin….there is no discrimination and music unites people, do you feel that?
Yes it’s true…
And this whole community is still fantastic all over the world and it makes us very proud to be part of all this and to feel that our name is connected to very positive things. Some people say Heavy Metal might end, but no, I don’t feel that, because new bands are always appearing, with new musical directions, but above all marked by what we do as well as what we did in the past.
Portugal?
Great country. The last time I was there was to watch a soccer game (laughs). We have already been to Porto and Lisbon and of course we would like to come back to Portugal, as we talked about initially, let’s see the future, let’s see what awaits us and despite all the hope we also have to be realistic about the difficulties in a normalization for our industry.
