WOM Interviews – Mano de Piedra (EN / ES)
Mano De Piedra was a good surprise of ours in 2019. Coming from Galicia, the band has powerful sound that mixes the best of both worlds: Rock and Metal, always with a strong stoner/sludge feel. Their debut album is absolutely recomended and since they’re visiting Portugal for the second time, we had to talk with them. By Fernando Ferreira / Photos Vase Photography
Hello and welcome to our World Of Metal. I would like to start by saying that I was taken by surprise by your debut album, “Today’s Ashes”. I think it’s the best presentation possible a band can have. What are the reactions you’ve been getting on the album so far?
Thank you for giving us a place in your magazine and we are very glad that you liked Today’s Ashes. We are very happy and satisfied with the reviews and reactions that the album is receiving mainly in Spain, which is where we have been promoting it since we launched it at the end of October. It has been part of several TOPs of best national albums of 2019 and we did not expect it, he has caught us a bit by surprise.
Tell us more about the road to reach “Today’s Ashes”, was it complicated to release the album? I know you did it independently…
Almost the entire album was already composed when we recorded our presentation EP at the end of 2017. We prefer to mature the songs, discard some and strengthen our style better since we had only been together as a band for 1 year, we needed to know each other better musically. It wasn’t until August 2018 that we decided to start recording Today’s Ashes. When we released it, we opted to do it together with 7 independent spanish labels, so that we could minimize the costs of manufacturing CDs and vinyl and count on the help of these 7 stamps to make ourselves known throughout Spain, and in turn that the distribution of the album should be as wide as possible. The contact with the seals was complicated for several things, first because we were / are a band with little time on the road and did not know us, second because in general it is difficult that independent labels (normally managed by a single person) can afford to release many works in the same year, and it usually happens that their editions are already “closed” many months in advance.
How about the recording of the album. Being your first one, were you nervous to go on studio? I know you’ve already recorded your self titled EP in 2017 but this time was something different… how was the experience?
We all have experience in recording albums with our previous bands, so the nerves … are the usual hahaha. The change with respect to the EP was that this time we wanted to “take the step” and do things right. We started recording Today’s Ashes with our colleague and producer “Iago Lorenzo” at the end of August 2018. Due to the huge amount of work Iago had pending, we took it quite calmly, and it was not until September 2019 that we finished the album. Working with him is very easy, he knows what he wants from the first moment, we can only praise him for the result. We can assure you that if everything goes well, Iago will be the producer of our next job.
The sound is really powerful, for me is one the things that made me like it so much. Do you had a clear mind of you wanted to achieve? Did you produce it yourselves?
The sound of the album has been Iago Lorenzo’s magic, he was the one who decided which amplifiers to use, which drum kit, drumheads, drum tuning, etc … The songs were only modified a little bit when entering the studio, but the main production work has been work from Iago.
Being so close to Portugal, I’m always curious in knowing how is the scene in Spain, specially in Galicia. Is getting stronger?
In Galicia there is a lot of live music, many bands of many styles, a lot of quality in general. In Vigo, which is where we are from, most of the rock and metal scene in Galicia is concentrated. We have at least 4 venues where concerts of rock and metal are scheduled every week. We believe that it has always been this way, in some times more and in others less, but artistic restlessness is something we have always had in Galicia.
And when you talk about the scene, we have to talk about the live concerts. Do you have opportunity to play live, not only on your region but to go through the rest of Spain?
To date we have not been many times outside Galicia, we have played in Madrid, Porto and Ponferrada in 2019 and this year we have already played in León and Talavera de la Reina. We have shows planned in more cities like Castellón, Málaga, etc … For us it is a great effort to move around Spain since we are in a quite remote corner and the displacements never go down from the 5 or 6 hours of travel. But that’s the life of the musician, road and rock and roll.
We also know you’re bound to came to Portugal for the first time. What are your expectations for that concert.
It would actually be the second time. On the first occasion we played with Heavy Cross of Flowers and the Spanish band Krazark at Woodstock 69 Rock bar in Porto at the end of May 2019. We really want to return to Portugal, you always make us feel at home. This time we return thanks to Davi Cruz from Metal in Portugal to play with the Bea and Telmo Cruz brothers but with his other band Spitgod and with the band Zurrapa. We hope to see you all in Corroios and Porto, it’s going to be two nights to remember!
First album is out, and it’s really great, so what can we expect for the future of Mano De Piedra?
We will be all this 2020 presenting Today’s Ashes wherever we can and in turn composing what will be our second long duration. We have arrived a little late to get into festival lineups, both in Spain and Portugal, but this first semester of the year we will dedicate it exclusively to tour the Iberian peninsula and make ourselves known.
Just to finish, I have to ask out of curiosity. Spanish bands have a huge tendency to sing on your language. The fact that you sing in english points out to a clear intention to reach out even further, or is it simply the way you express better?
It has not been a premeditated decision to sing in English in these first two works. Our drummer David, who is the main composer of the lyrics, felt comfortable writing in English and the songs were created like that, but we didn’t rule out writing in Spanish or any other language in the future.

Hola y bienvenidos a nuestro mundo de metal. Me gustaría comenzar diciendo que me sorprendió su álbum debut, “Today’s Ashes”. Creo que es la mejor presentación posible que puede tener una banda. ¿Cuáles son las reacciones que has estado recibiendo en el álbum hasta ahora?
Gracias por hacernos un hueco en vuestra revista y nos alegra mucho que os haya gustado Today’s Ashes. La verdad es que estamos muy contentos y satisfechos por las críticas que está recibiendo el disco en España principalmente, que es donde hemos estado promocionándolo desde que lo lanzamos a finales de Octubre. Ha formado parte de varios TOPs de mejores discos nacionales de 2019 y no nos lo esperábamos, nos ha pillado un poco por sorpresa.
Cuéntanos más sobre el camino para llegar a “Today’s Ashes”, ¿fue complicado lanzar el álbum? Sé que lo hiciste de forma independiente …
Gran parte del disco estaba ya compuesto cuando grabamos nuestro EP de presentación a finales de 2017. Preferimos madurar los temas, ir descartando algunos con el tiempo y afianzar mejor nuestro estilo ya que llevábamos apenas 1 año juntos como banda, necesitábamos conocernos mejor musicalmente. No fue hasta agosto de 2018 que decidimos comenzar a grabar Today’s Ashes. A la hora de editarlo nos decantamos por hacerlo conjuntamente con 7 sellos españoles independientes, de forma que pudiésemos minimizar los costes de la fabricación de CDs y vinilos y contar con la ayuda de estos 7 sellos para darnos a conocer en toda España, y a su vez que la distribución del álbum tuviese el mayor alcance posible. El contacto con los sellos nos resultó complicado por varias cosas, primero porque éramos/somos una banda con poco tiempo de vida y no nos conocían, segundo porque en general es difícil que sellos independientes (normalmente gestionados por una única persona) puedan permitirse lanzar muchos trabajos en el mismo año, y suele pasar que sus ediciones las tienen ya “cerradas” con muchos meses de antelación.
¿Qué tal la grabación del álbum? Siendo el primero, ¿estabas nervioso por ir al estudio? Sé que ya grabaste tu EP homónimo en 2017, pero esta vez fue algo diferente … ¿cómo fue la experiencia?
Todos tenemos experiencia en grabar discos con nuestras anteriores bandas, por lo que los nervios… son los de siempre hahaha. El cambio con respecto al EP fue que esta vez quisimos dar “el paso” y hacer las cosas bien. Comenzamos a grabar Today’s Ashes con nuestro colega y productor “Iago Lorenzo” a finales de agosto de 2018. Debido a la ingente cantidad de trabajos que tenía pendientes Iago, nos lo tomamos con bastante calma, y no fue hasta Septiembre de 2019 que finalizamos el álbum. Trabajar con él es muy fácil, sabe lo que quiere desde el primer momento, no podemos más que elogiarlo por el resultado. Os podemos asegurar que si todo va bien, Iago será el productor de nuestro próximo trabajo.
El sonido es realmente poderoso, para mí es una de las cosas que me hizo gustar tanto. ¿Tenía una mente clara de lo que quería lograr? ¿Lo produjeron ustedes mismos?
El sonido del disco ha sido cosa de Iago Lorenzo, él fue quien decidió que amplificadores usar, que bombo, parches, afinación de batería, etc… Las canciones apenas se modificaron al entrar en el estudio, pero el principal trabajo de producción ha sido obra de Iago.
Al estar tan cerca de Portugal, siempre tengo curiosidad por saber cómo es la escena en España, especialmente en Galicia. ¿Se está volviendo más fuerte?
En Galicia hay mucha música en directo, muchísimas bandas de infinidad de estilos, mucha calidad en general. En Vigo, que es de dónde somos nosotros, se concentra la mayor parte de la escena rock y metal de Galicia. Tenemos al menos 4 locales en donde se programan conciertos todas las semanas de rock y metal. Creemos que siempre ha sido así, en algunas épocas más y en otras menos, pero la inquietud artística es algo que siempre hemos tenido en Galicia.
Y cuando hablas sobre la escena, tenemos que hablar sobre los conciertos en vivo. ¿Tienes la oportunidad de tocar en vivo, no solo en tu región sino también por el resto de España?
Hasta la fecha no hemos salido mucho de Galicia, hemos tocado en Madrid, Porto y Ponferrada en 2019 y este año ya hemos pasado por León y Talavera de la Reina. Tenemos planificados conciertos en más ciudades como Castellón, Málaga, etc… Para nosotros es un gran esfuerzo desplazarnos por España ya que estamos en una esquina bastante apartada y los desplazamientos no bajan nunca de las 5 o 6 horas de viaje. Pero así es la vida del músico, carretera y rock&roll.
También sabemos que seguramente vendrás a Portugal por primera vez. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas para ese concierto?
En realidad sería la segunda vez. En la primera ocasión tocamos junto a los portugueses Heavy Cross of Flowers y la banda española Krazark en Woodstock 69 Rock bar en Porto a finales de mayo de 2019. Tenemos muchas ganas de volver a Portugal, nos hacéis sentir siempre como en casa. Esta vez volvemos gracias a Davi Cruz de Metal em Portugal para tocar con los hermanos Bea y Telmo Cruz pero con su otro proyecto Spitgod y con la banda Zurrapa. Esperamos veros a todos en Corroios y Porto, van a ser dos noches para el recuerdo!
Ya salió el primer álbum, y es realmente genial, entonces, ¿qué podemos esperar para el futuro de Mano De Piedra?
Estaremos todo este 2020 presentando Today’s Ashes allá donde podamos y a su vez componiendo el que será nuestro segundo larga duración. Hemos llegado un poco tarde para conseguir entrar en carteles de festivales, tanto en España como en Portugal, pero este primer semestre del año lo dedicaremos exclusivamente a recorrer la península y darnos a conocer.
Solo para terminar, tengo que preguntar por curiosidad. Las bandas españolas tienen una gran tendencia a cantar en tu idioma. El hecho de que cantes en inglés indica una clara intención de llegar incluso más lejos, ¿o es simplemente la forma en que te expresas mejor?
No ha sido una decisión premeditada cantar en inglés en estos dos primeros trabajos. Nuestro batería David, que es el compositor principal de las letras, se sentía cómodo escribiendo en inglés y se fueron creando los temas así, pero no descartamos en un futuro escribir en español o cualquier otro idioma.
