WOM Interviews – The Dead Daisies (PT/ENG)

Nas vésperas de visitar o nosso país, a World Of Metal conseguiu falar com Marco Mendoza, o seu baixista, também conhecido por ter feito parte de bandas como Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Ted Nugent, Black Star Riders, entre muitas outras. Então para todo o nosso World Of Metal, e poucos antes de dia 4 de Dezembro, quando vão subir ao palco no Lisboa Ao Vivo, aqui estão eles, The Dead Daisies – por Miguel Correia e Rosa Soares.

Antes de tudo, muito obrigado por esta entrevista e bem vindos a Portugal pela segunda vez. A primeira vez foi quando abriram para os Scorpions. Como é que sentes o público português e o que é que esperas agora, num concerto em que são a principal atracção, num espaço mais pequeno?

Bem, todos temos visitado Portugal no passado com os nossos muitos projectos, a tocar em arenas e por vezes em salas mais pequenas, mas a resposta tem sido realmente fantástica! Então ao re-apresentar-nos a nós como banda e à nossa música aos fãs em Portugal quando viemos com os Scorpions, abriu-nos muitas oportunidades e convites para que pudéssemos voltar, então decidimos tocar num ambiente mais íntimo para que tivessemos mais tempo para tocar e mostrar aos nossos fãs mais antigos e novos tudo o que temos para oferecer.

Porquê este regresso, (embora ainda bem que acontece), num espaço tão curto de tempo?

Esta digressão tem estado a ser preparada já por algum tempo então, como disse, quisemos voltar mais cedo do que tarde. Felizmente, tivemos muitos convites e aceitámos.

E como é que a digressão tem estado a correr, com muitas datas e muita diversão?

Estamos definitivamente a divertir-nos muito e a ter um alinhamento diferente todas as noites e também a adicionar um meet & greet acústico gratuito ao qual chamámos Daisyland para os primeiros 50 amigos que apareçam (as coisas mudam de vez em quando por isso mantenham-se actualizados em thedeaddaisies.com). Estamos definitivamente a aparecer no radar de uma forma mais expressiva, o público está a multiplicar-se e a fome e sede por mais Dead Daisies é evidente… então estamos a surfar a onda e a divertir-nos milhões!

Como é estar numa banda feita de músicos que já passaram por bandas grandes? Será que os egos que nasceram nestas bandas interferem com o papel desempenhado nos Dead Daisies?

Na minha opinião, o contrário é mais próximo da verdade, temos amizades aqui e também temos o respeito mútuo, então as nossas experiências no passado tem sido um grande processo de aprendizagem… gostamos de dizer vamos deixar o nosso ego fora da sala antes de nos juntarmos para escrever, trabalhar e/ou gravar e parece que tem resultado bem até agora… sem qualquer problema nesse departamento.

“Burn It Down” está a ser um êxisto. A nossa questão é até que ponto a composição deste álbum foi orientada externamente, desde que soa bem mais pesado que o seu antecessor. Foi uma decisão vossa ou não?

Tudo o que fazemos juntos é como o nosso fundador coloca (somos um collectivo e tudo o que fizemos foi como um colectivo) então no início do processo de composição houve definitivamente conversações sobre como queríamos chegar ao lado mais pesado sem comprometer o nosso som de uma forma drástica… então sim, todos decidimos ir nessa direcção e parece que funcionou.

Notei que todas as canções foram creditadas a todos os membros da banda, como é que isso funciona? Todos os membros da banda surgem com ideias diferentes?

Sim, estamos todos a trazer ideias constantemente e gravá-las para que quando precisemos delas, elas possam estar disponíveis para que se desenvolvam em canções, mas sim, todos somos compositores e todos temos toneladas a oferecer no departamento da escrita… o poço está cheio! Se é que me percebes.

Sentes que a maior parte do vosso público quer ver e ouvir-vos como fãs dos The Dead Daisies ou têm a simples curiosidade de ver em palco um alinhamento de estrelas composto por ex-membros de Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne…

Para ser honesto? Sim, sentimos que o interesse inicial é provocado pela ideia de que todos viemos destas bandas estabelecidas e bem-sucedidas do passado, pelo que somos muito gratos! Mas depois o nosso trabalho é introduzi-losao que somos e ao que fazemos, tê-los a deixar os nossos concertos com a ideia que os The Dead Daisies estão aqui para ficar e que temos toneladas de música para oferecer e muitos mais outros projectos a serem feitos, e se não te importas que diga, os The Daisies são uma grande banda e eu posso dizer isso à vontade porque já estive numas quantas antes… esta banda domina!!

Vamos ter um novo álbum dos The Dead Daisies?

Sim, definitivamente!! Quando é um assunto de debate mas sentimos que apenas começámos agora e queremos continuar nesta viagem chamada The Dead Daisies!! Obrigado!

Just before The Dead Daisies come to Portugal, World Of Metal got to talk with Marco Mendoza, their bass player, also know in acts like Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Ted Nugent, Black Star Riders, among many others. So for all our World Of Metal, here it is, The Dead Daisies – by Miguel Correia e Rosa Soares

First of all, thank you for this interview and welcome to Portugal for the second time. The first time, it was at the opening of the Scorpions. How did you feel the Portuguese public and what you expect now, in a concert of yours, in a much smaller space?

Well we all have been to Portugal in the past with many other projects, playing arenas and sometimes smaller venues, but the response has been really amazing !! So by re-introducing ourselves and our music to the fans in Portugal as a band when we came with the Scorpions opened lots of opportunities and invitations for us to come back, so we decided to come play in a more intimate setting so that we could get into a longer set and showing our new fans and older fans what it is we have to offer.

Why this return, (albeit, glad it happens), in a short time?

This tour has been in the works for a while so like I said we wanted to come back sooner than later. Fortunately, we had many invitations and we took them.

And how is this tour been going down, with many dates and lots of fun?

We are definitely having tons of fun and delivering a different set every night, and also adding a free acoustic meet & greet called Daisyland to the first 50 friends that show up (things do change from time to time so stay up to date at thedeaddaisies.com). We are definitely getting on the radar in a bigger way, the attendance is multiplying and the hunger and thirst for more Dead Daisies is evident… so we are riding the wave and having a blast!!!!

What is it like to be a band made up of musicians who have already belonged to big bands? Do the egos born in these bands interfere with the role played in the Dead Daisies?

In my opinion the contrary is closer to the truth, we have friendships here and we also have mutual respect, so our experiences in the past has been a great learning process… we like to say lets leave our ego’s outside the room before we get together to write, work and or record and it seems to be working well….. no problem in that department!!

“Burn It Down” is being a hit. Our question is to what extent the composition of this album was oriented externally, since it sounds heavier than its predecessor. Was it your decision or not?

Everything we do we do together it’s like our founder put it ( WE ARE A COLLECTIVE and all we done do as a COLLECTIVE) so at the beginning of the writing process there was definitely a conversation touching on how we wanted to get on the heavier side without compromising our sound in a drastic way.. so yes we all decided to go in that direction and it seemed to work.

I noticed that all songs are credited to all members of the band, how does that work? Do all the band members come in with different ideas?

Yes, we all keep bringing ideas constantly and record them so that when we need them they are available to develop into songs, but yes we are all writers and have tons to offer in the writing department ……. THE WELL IS FULL!! If you know what I mean.

You feel that most of The Dead Daisies’ audience wants to see and hear you as fans of D.D. or the simple curiosity of seeing on stage a set of stars while former Whitesnake, former Mötley Crüe, ex-Ozzy Osborne …

To be honest? Yes we do feel that the initial interest is sparked by the idea that we all come from successful and established bands from the past , for that we are very GRATEFULL!! But then our job is introduce them to what we are and what we do, to have them leave our shows with the IDEA that THE DEAD DAISIES are HERE TO STAY and we have tons of music to offer ,and many other Projects in the works , and if you don’t mind me saying “THE DEAD DAISIES’’ is A GREAT BAND and I can say that because I have been in a few before… this band KICKS!!!

Are we going to have a new Dead Daisies album?

YES DEFINITELY!!! When is something to be discussed, but we feel we have just started and want to continue in this JOURNEY called THE DEAD DAISIES!! OBRIGADO!
